Get ready to be amazed!

The local explorer Pierre Farrugia is known to often take a cultural approach to his regular hike vlogging, and this time, he’s taken on the Bingemma Necropolis. This is a burial site used in ancient times that’s shrouded in mystery, as archaeologists can’t reach a consensus on the time period. While the exact time period remains uncertain - ranging from the Bronze Age to a Punico-Roman necropolis or even first-century Greek catacombs. One thing is certain though: this enigmatic place was briefly used as a hiding spot for the locals during the bombings of World War II, creating even more historical intrigue around this area.

Pierre starts his expedition walking along the Victoria Lines located at Bingemma, that look like Malta’s very own Great Wall of China. He soon begins to come across the man made caves that he's seeking, some of which feature intriguing human-crafted elements such as candle niches and storage areas – features one would spot in the catacombs in nearby Rabat.

During his hike, Pierre comes across some truly impressive cave complexes, some of which are so expansive that they have openings resembling modern skylights that shine the light into large caved areas. His adventurous spirit and thirst for exploration allows him to discover connections between one cave and another, showing just how extensive these ancient burial sites used to be.

If you’ve ever visited and enjoyed the experience the St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat offered, you’ll definitely want to see this video at the very least – and who knows, maybe even follow in Pierre’s footsteps, and go exploring yourself!

Have you ever explored the Bingemma Necropolis?
