Fancy a spot of plogging? This running club is organising a unique run in Malta this weekend
A marathon with a twist.
Don’t have plans this Sunday? We’ve got you sorted! Why not join the Ladies’ Running Club in their Plogging event?
But what is plogging? According to the Ladies’ Running Club, the term ‘plogging’ is a mash-up of ‘jogging’ and the Swedish phrase ‘plocka upp’ meaning ‘to pick up’, in this case, litter!
It is actually not the first plogging event in Malta, as many running enthusiasts started picking up a few pieces of litter at the end of their runs to help combat the islands' litter problem. And now, the Ladies’ Running Club has decided to take it a step further, organising this run, or walk for those who prefer it, specifically to pick up any litter from the surroundings.
The event is a 10km charity run (or a 5km charity) walk starting from Mellieha’s third bay at 8am on Sunday 30th September (meet up time at 7:45am). The 10km route will start from Mellieha Bay, up to l-Ahrax tal-Mellieha, around Little Armier and back down to the bay. The 5km walk will follow the same route, but will head back once people reach the little chapel.

The Mellieha Local Council has provided the Club with bio-degradable recycling bags and gloves for the event. Litter bags will also be left at 2km landmarks as indicated on the map, and then collected by the Cleansing and Maintenance Department. Apart from this, a €7 donation from each participant will go directly to AAA, a charity that houses 95 stray dogs, helping participants to do even more good!
So, why not get some exercise in and help the environment at the same time?
