Beneath Malta’s rocky landscape lies one of the island’s most vital yet often overlooked natural resources - groundwater. This hidden network of underground reservoirs plays a crucial role in sustaining Malta’s ecosystems, agriculture, and daily water needs.

A recent field visit to Misraħ Suffara offered participants a unique opportunity to explore how groundwater forms, flows, and supports life beneath the surface. Experts explained the delicate balance that governs Malta’s aquifers; how rainfall seeps through the island’s limestone layers, replenishing underground reserves that have provided fresh water for generations.

Visitors also learned about the challenges facing groundwater sustainability, including over-extraction, pollution, and the impacts of climate change. These pressures highlight the urgent need for conservation and responsible water management to ensure this vital resource continues to sustain both people and nature.

Misraħ Suffara serves as a powerful reminder that what lies beneath our feet is as important as what we see above ground; a precious natural heritage that demands awareness, protection, and respect.
