History meets innovation in the second instalment of the lecture series Historical Cartography in the Digital Age: Applications of GIS and WebGIS. This session, “Landscapes in Paper and Place: Rethinking Geo-Spaces through Malta’s Cabrei and Country Maps,” explores how centuries-old maps of Malta are being transformed into cutting-edge digital tools.
Led by Daniel Fenech, Christopher Gauci, Martha Piscopo, George Buhagiar, and Emanuele Colica, the lecture shines a light on the meticulous process behind Malta’s newly launched comparative digital map, which aligns historic Joint Ordnance Survey Sheets (1896–1927) with modern aerial photography.
From digitising 152 paper surveys to georeferencing them into a single accessible online map, this is an inside look at how archival treasures are being reshaped for researchers, creators, and curious explorers alike. Presented as part of the National Library of Malta’s 8th Public Lecture Series, in collaboration with the Public Works Department.
