Take note! Here’s what to do if you find an injured hedgehog or orphaned hoglet in Malta
The Malta Ranger Unit (MRU) recently shared important advice after receiving a call about a tiny orphaned hoglet found in need of help.
If you ever come across an injured hedgehog or a lone hoglet, the first step is to carefully check the surrounding area. Often, a mother hedgehog may be nearby searching for her young.
If no adult is in sight, the next step is to gently secure the animal in a box to keep it safe. Importantly, do not attempt to feed or give it water unless specifically advised.
The best course of action is to immediately call the Wildlife Rescue Team Malta (WRTM) on 9999 9505. Their trained volunteers can provide the right care, and they will advise you over the phone on whether food or water should be offered in the meantime.
In the recent case, the finder did the right thing and contacted WRTM straight away. Volunteers were dispatched to take over care of the hoglet, ensuring it had the best chance of survival.
The MRU thanked Wildlife Rescue Team Malta for their “outstanding work” and reassured the public that rangers remain on standby to assist NGOs whenever needed. Any cases involving wildlife will always be referred to the licensed organisations that can properly rehabilitate them.
Let’s do right by these little cuties!
