Danger at sea! Kayakers warn that Munxar arch in Marsaskala is now too unstable to approach
As the kayaking group reminded the public: nature doesn't come with safety rails!
The popular kayaking group Get Out and Kayak (GOAK) has issued a public safety alert regarding the iconic Munxar Arch, warning nature lovers, paddlers, boaters, and hikers to stay well away due to its increasingly unstable condition.
‘The arch is severely fractured,’ they wrote in a social media post, ‘with large chunks already collapsed and deep vertical cracks visible. In our opinion, this natural formation is on the verge of total collapse.’
While the Munxar Arch remains a stunning natural feature, especially when seen from the sea, the group stresses that its beauty is deceptive and dangerous. Paddling under or near the arch is extremely risky, with the group urging people to keep their distance at all times.
Their warning is backed by photographic evidence taken during a recent kayak tour, clearly showing structural cracks and fallen rock debris – signs of serious erosion, likely worsened by this past winter’s rough seas.
This isn’t the first time the arch’s condition has raised concern. Back in October 2024, local hiker Pierre Farrugia flagged visible signs of instability, but as summer 2025 approaches and foot and sea traffic pick up again, renewed attention is critical to preventing potential accidents.
GOAK ends their warning with a simple message: ‘Nature is incredible, but it doesn’t come with safety rails. Admire it from a safe distance… protect yourselves and help preserve the fragile coastline for everyone.’
Hikers should also definitely avoid walking on top of the arch, and swimming anywhere close to the base is strongly discouraged.
