Cyprus is calling! Malta amongst countries given the green light to operate as of June
Malta’s airport has been closed since March and authorities haven’t indicated its reopening date.
On Friday, Cyprus announced that Malta has been green lit, among other countries; to operate flights to the location come 9th June. These select countries are those with low COVID-19 rates like Malta.
“Transport Minister Yiannis Karousos said flights will begin in two phases — June 9 and 20 — from two groups of countries selected by an advisory body of medical experts,” Associate Press reports.
The list of countries to operate flights to Cyprus come 9th June include Greece, Malta, Bulgaria, Norway, Austria, Finland, Slovenia, Hungary, Israel, Denmark, Germany, Slovakia and Lithuania. The second group includes Switzerland, Poland, Romania, Croatia, Estonia and the Czech Republic.
Karousos said that those travellers from countries in the above groups must obtain a health certificate confirming they have tested negative for the virus three days before departure. As of 20th June, those travelling from the first group won’t need a health certificate, but those from the second do. It is still however advised that a certificate is obtained.
But before we make plans, it all depends on Malta's situation. The airport officially closed in March in order to minimise the spread of COVID-19, but the government has yet to indicate and notify the public as to when Malta International Airport will re-open.
