The word "influencer" is starting to appear more and more in everyday vocabulary, but for a certain Shanel De Battista, marketing through the use of her personal namesake and self-branding, has been a career for a decade!
When she's not on a shoot, rubbing shoulders with other celebs at glitzy parties or hanging out with fellow model friends, Shanel is busy keeping up to date with meetings, organising events and strategising marketing campaigns with big-name brands and companies. The role of an influencer is truly much more that it would appear on the surface, but it has to be said, it does look like a ton of fun!
We caught up with Shanel to talk about her career, and, obviously, we just had to ask her for a few fashion tips while we were at it! Here's what she had to share with Guide Me Malta.
Hi Shanel! We just love your looks and joie de vivre! As a style and beauty blogger, what does your role entail?
"There's a lot of work behind the glam and final result on social media today, and I often get misjudged as it might not look like there is most of the time. I am extremely passionate about the fashion and beauty industry and I am completely in love with what I do. To be very honest, I don’t consider myself a blogger but more of a marketer. I have been marketing companies and their products for over 10 years!"
Wow! So being an influencer is hardly a new thing for you! What does a day in the life of Shanel look like and what do you get up to on a day to day basis?
"Let’s start with Monday...Monday is extremely important to me. I get up early, and do 50 squats everyday. Unfortunately, I have not been to the gym in a while and it's on the top of my to do list! After that, I have my breakfast and plan my week. Every day usually involves two to four meetings and a lot of calls. I end my workday working on my laptop - editing and reasearching constantly, as everything changes very often and it's crucial to keep updated!"
What is it about fashion and beauty that you love?
"I love that I can express myself through it! I love changing my style very often and trying out looks to express who I am through what I wear and how I present myself."
What message of inspiration would you like to pass on through your posts?
"That there are no bad ideas! Just be who you are and do what you love, but most of all be real!"
So true! What are your favourite shops and brands?
"The list is endless. Today we have such a great choice that it's hard to pick a favourite! If I must choose, I would go for Zara."
Finally, what three beauty products would you take with you to a desert island?
"100% my Ellie & Carl balance oil. It keeps my skin fully hydrated. And definitely a lip balm and a 50+ body sun protection spray!"
