Celebrating culture! Malta International Folk Festival to bring vibrant colour to Malta’s streets this weekend
This will be the fifth edition of the festival that brings European cultures together
Malta’s central location in the Mediterranean has long made it a crossroads for diverse cultures, a fact still evident today in various aspects of its heritage, particularly the Maltese language.
This weekend, Malta will celebrate its rich cultural tapestry during the fifth edition of the Malta International Folk Festival. Folk groups, flag-wavers, and bagpipers from across Europe will perform traditional dances and historical parades in various Maltese localities from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th September.
The festival kicks off on Friday at 7.30pm in Bugibba’s main square. On Saturday, it will collaborate with another popular event, ‘Zejt iz-Zejtun’, which celebrates the olive-picking and pressing season for local olive oil production. Sunday’s grand finale will begin at 6.30pm with a parade through Valletta, culminating in a final show at Great Siege Square.
Participating groups will come from countries including Bulgaria, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, and Lithuania. The local groups Paul Curmi Dancers and Ogygia Folk Group will also be sharing some Maltese spirit at the festival.
Don’t miss the chance to join in the celebration of diverse cultures, history, and music that will fill Malta’s streets with some vibrant energy this weekend!
