Celebrating craftsmanship! Inauguration of the Vincenzo Bugeja Technical Museum in Ħamrun
The Muzew Tekniku Vincenzo Bugeja – Istituto Tecnico Vincenzo Bugeja Workshops has officially opened its doors, marking a new chapter in the preservation of Malta’s industrial heritage.

MIHA
The museum is now under the care of the Malta Industrial Heritage Association (MIHA), a voluntary organisation dedicated to safeguarding Malta’s industrial past through preservation, restoration, and public education. Entrusted with this 122-year-old landmark, MIHA’s mission is to ensure that the workshops remain accessible for future generations.
The Vincenzo Bugeja Workshops were established in 1903 by Marchese Vincenzo Bugeja, with the aim of training young boys in woodworking and metalworking through apprenticeships. Though they have been inactive for some time, the workshops remain in remarkably good condition thanks to the ongoing care of the Vincenzo Bugeja Foundation.
At the inauguration ceremony, MIHA’s president recalled the words of Hon. Agatha Barbara, then Minister of Culture, who in 1979 urged firms and individuals to donate unused machinery to the museum rather than discard it. This call remains just as relevant today, as Malta continues to build awareness around preserving its industrial history.

MIHA
Born on 16th February 1821, Vincenzo Bugeja was a successful businessman whose wealth came from inheritance, investments, and gambling. Nicknamed the ‘Maltese Matador’ for his success in Monte Carlo and Hamburg casinos, he channelled much of his fortune into philanthropy, funding initiatives that benefited Maltese society.

MIHA
The Istituto Vincenzo Bugeja, which houses the workshops, was designed by renowned Maltese architect Emanuele Galizia, further adding to the site’s architectural and cultural significance.
