Heritage Malta is set to celebrate the Autumn Equinox with a special series of guided tours at Mnajdra on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of September. This unique event offers participants the chance to witness the remarkable alignment of the southern megalithic structure of Mnajdra with the rising sun, a phenomenon marking the beginning of autumn.

Mnajdra, part of the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeological Park, is one of Malta's most significant prehistoric sites. The alignment of the temple with the sun is believed to reflect an ancient understanding of celestial movements.

Prehistoric societies likely relied on such astronomical knowledge to track the changing seasons, essential for their agricultural practices. Without modern calendars, the sun, stars, and moon guided these early societies in timing their planting and harvesting cycles.

Following the tour, participants will be treated to complimentary coffee and snacks, offering a relaxing way to reflect on the morning’s experience.

Due to the limited space and the exclusivity of this opportunity, tickets are available in limited numbers. They can be purchased at any Heritage Malta site or museum for €30, with a discounted price of €20 for Heritage Malta members. Tickets are also available online at the Heritage Malta Store here.

Participants are asked to meet at the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra site early to ensure they don’t miss the breathtaking sight of the rising sun during this special astronomical event.
