Following its exhibition in London, the acclaimed film URNA is coming home to Malta! The premiere screening will take place on 23rd August at Spazju Kreattiv Cinema, starting at 5:30pm, with free entry for all attendees, although booking is required.

URNA was created by a collaborative team including Andrew Borg Wirth, Anthony Bonnici, Matthew Attard Navarro, Thomas Mifsud, Anne Immelé, Stephanie Sant, and Tanil Raif. The project won the 2025 London Design Biennale Medal, awarded to the most outstanding overall contribution.

The installation and film explore a radical future for the adoption of cremation in Malta, proposing a new funerary ritual that is both culturally significant and spiritually resonant. URNA is physically represented by a monumental sphere crafted from reconstituted limestone, serving as the nucleus for a wider series of components including the film and a research book. Drawing on Malta’s historical connection to limestone, URNA exemplifies the intersection of heritage and sustainability, while creating space for the new.

The event will open with the 10-minute film URNA, directed by Stephanie Sant for the Malta Pavilion at the London Design Biennale. The screening will be followed by a discussion and Q&A session with the creative team, allowing audiences to gain insight into the vision and process behind this innovative project.

The one-hour event will conclude with a 15-minute documentary by Sam Chetcuti, which traces the journey of URNA from Malta to London and beyond, capturing the team’s creative process and the realization of the Malta Pavilion at the Biennale.

Intrigued? Experience this award-winning project for free, engage with the creative team, and spend a Saturday afternoon considering a thought-provoking vision for Malta’s cultural future.
