Benny Muscat, known as the ‘Nonno’ behind the famous St Paul’s Bay eatery La Buona Trattoria del Nonno, has passed away.
Benny has a long history in the Maltese culinary scene, with his first joint venture being a steakhouse in Mosta called The Whisper, which became The Knight Club & Farmhouse after he acquired full ownership of the restaurant.
In 1990, it was converted into Ta Marija Restaurant, named after his wife, which remains an icon of Mosta cuisine till this day.
Benny also created Mocambo Hotel & Restaurant at Palazzo Pescatore in St Paul’s Bay, which was trusted by large firms to serve foreign delegates.
In 2012, he came out of retirement to present his idea of a genuine trattoria, and so La Buona Trattoria del Nonno was born.
The restaurant paid tribute to its founder, describing him as a devoted husband , father, grandfather, mentor, businessman, and friend, and a true icon and pioneer of Maltese hospitality.
“Nonno built more than just restaurants — he built experiences, memories, friendships, and a way of life centred around generosity, passion, respect, and love for people,” the restaurant said.
“His creativity, charisma, wisdom, and unmistakable presence touched generations of guests, employees, friends, and family alike.”
“His spirit will forever remain part of Trattoria del Nonno, Ta’ Marija Restaurant, and Palazzo Pescatore — places that carried his heart, passion, and endless dedication every single day.”
“Although our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on through his beloved family, the businesses he built with pride, and every life he touched along the way. His story, values, and love for hospitality will continue through all of us.”
Benny will be laid to rest following a funeral mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Church, St Paul’s Bay, on Thursday 28th May. A wake to celebrate his life will follow at La Buona Trattoria del Nonno.
His family are asking mourners to send donations to Hospice Malta in lieu of flowers.
