Back to the arena! ‘Gladiator’ returns to Fort Ricasoli for a special outdoor screening
One of the most epic films of the 2000s is coming home.
Fans of epic cinema, mark your calendars, because ‘Gladiator’ is making a triumphant return to the very place where it first came to life on screen.
As part of the upcoming Mediterrane Film Festival, movie lovers will be treated to a free outdoor screening of Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning masterpiece ‘Gladiator’, right at Fort Ricasoli, one of the film’s original shooting locations. The event takes place on 14th June at 9PM, and promises an unforgettable night under the stars, surrounded by history and cinematic glory.
Originally released in 2000, ‘Gladiator’ captivated audiences worldwide with its gripping story, powerful performances, and stunning visuals. Malta played a key role in creating the illusion of ancient Rome, with scenes filmed at Fort Ricasoli in Kalkara, the Valletta Ditch at Saint Michael's Bastion, and the Grand Harbour, which offered a dramatic backdrop worthy of the empire.
The film follows General Maximus, who is betrayed, stripped of his rank, and sold into slavery by the power-hungry Commodus, the man who murders his own father, Emperor Marcus Aurelius, to seize the throne. Forced into life as a gladiator, Maximus fights his way through the arena, seeking justice and revenge for the murder of his family.
This special screening is just one of the highlights tied to the Mediterrane Film Festival, set to run from 21st to 29th June. And this year’s edition is even more meaningful, as Malta celebrates 100 years of film – a century of cinematic heritage that continues to grow stronger with each passing year.
