Back to the 60s! Do you remember Bonaci’s confectionery in Sliema?

The Strand in Sliema has gone through some insane changes and developments in the past couple of decades, so much so that it’s barely recognisable in old photos!

An image from the 1960s uploaded to Facebook by John C. Navarro shows a very different side to this iconic road, although some of you might recognise the two iconic establishments pictures: Tony’s Bar and Bonaci Confectionery.

Back then, many patrons would head to Tony’s Bar for a quick coffee or a refreshing drink, and believe it or not, not much has changed since then.

That’s right – this iconic bar still stands strong to this day, making it one of the oldest bars on the island!

Next door to Tony’s Bar, one could find Bonaci’s Confectionery, which was synonymous with delicious cakes and sweets.

Unfortunately, the establishment has since shut down, although it has now been replaced by another tasty confectionery called Anni Venti.

“I used to go there with my friends those were the days”, one viewer commented.

My nannu was a pastry chef for Croce Bonaci before he emigrated to Australia in the 50’s,” a proud granddaughter added.

Do you remember Sliema looking like this?
