Anne at Fort St Angelo and visitors now have the opportunity to explore it.

Commissioned in 1531 by Grand Master Philippe Villiers de L’Isle Adam, the crypt was constructed beneath the chapel during the early years of the Order of St John’s presence in Malta. The chapel itself became the private chapel of the Grand Master, while the crypt served as the burial place of some of the Order’s earliest Grand Masters.

Four Grand Masters were originally laid to rest within the crypt: Philippe Villiers de L’Isle Adam, Piero de Ponte, Juan de Homedes and Claude de la Sengle. Their remains were later transferred to St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta.

Today, the underground space offers visitors a rare glimpse into the layers of history hidden beneath one of Malta’s most iconic fortresses. Fort St Angelo itself has played a central role in the islands’ history for centuries, from its medieval origins as Castrum Maris to its strategic role during the Great Siege of 1565.

The crypt will also be accessible during the special opening of Fort St Angelo on 8 September, with entry included in the admission ticket.
