As the summer heat fades and the first rains nourish the countryside, the island of Gozo is rejuvenated. The fields transform into a vibrant carpet of green, the air cools, and it becomes the perfect time to explore the island and embark on adventures made even more enjoyable by the milder weather – even the sea remains warm enough for a dip. Beyond nature’s charm, autumn sets the stage for some of Gozo’s most exciting events.

One of the most anticipated highlights of the season is the Gozo Opera. For years, this cultural event has been a key attraction, drawing both locals and visitors alike. Two iconic opera houses, Astra and Aurora, located on the same street in Victoria, Gozo’s main city, offer a series of breathtaking performances. The rivalry between the two ensures exceptional standards, and this year is no exception. The 'Opera is Gozo' programme will unfold throughout October, offering opera enthusiasts a month filled with music.

Astra

Kicking off the season is the third edition of the Ewfonija Grand Operatic Concert, a true celebration of talent. This event features the renowned soprano Marvic Baldacchino and tenor Alan Sciberras, who will perform a selection of operatic arias, accompanied by the Ewfonija Orchestra under the direction of Mariella Spiteri Cefai. Attendees can expect a night filled with masterpieces by legendary composers such as Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti, and Massenet, promising a spectacular start to Gozo’s opera season.

Aurora

Continuing the operatic offerings, Teatru tal-Opra Aurora will present ‘Il Trittico’ on 12th October, marking 100 years since the death of Giacomo Puccini. This set of three one-act operas – 'Il Tabarro’, ‘Suor Angelica’, and ‘Gianni Schicchi’ – explores themes of love, loss, and intrigue. With the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, the Aurora Opera Chorus, and an international cast directed by Riccardo Buscarini, this production is set to captivate audiences with its emotional depth and powerful performances.

Later in the month, Teatru Astra will stage ‘Giovanna d'Arco’, a rarely performed opera by Giuseppe Verdi, on 24th and 26th October. After more than 170 years, this opera returns to Malta, with soprano Sophie Gordeladze leading an outstanding cast. Under the baton of Maestro Dr John Galea and directed by Enrico Stinchelli, this production will explore the life of Joan of Arc, focusing on her heroism and sacrifice during the Hundred Years' War. With Verdi’s stirring score, this opera promises to be a deeply moving experience.

Beyond opera, Gozo has much more to offer in October. The Gozo International Kite and Wind Festival will take place on 19th and 20th October. This event is a spectacle of creativity, featuring colourful kites soaring through the sky, demonstrations, and kite-making workshops for all ages. Alongside these displays, there will be food stalls offering both local and international cuisine, as well as craft vendors showcasing Gozitan artistry. Set against the island’s stunning landscapes, this festival promises fun for the whole family.

October also brings a magical event in the small hamlet of Santa Lucija. On 13th October, this picturesque village hosts an open-air spectacle featuring local musical talents, with a hillside illuminated by hundreds of ‘fjakkoli’ – traditional Gozitan lanterns. As the sun sets, the lights create an ethereal atmosphere, transforming the countryside into a breathtaking wonderland. The combination of folk music and the flickering glow of the lanterns creates an enchanting evening, embodying the community spirit of Gozo.

Whether you're a fan of opera, outdoor activities, or simply looking for a unique experience, the island offers a wide array of events to suit all tastes.
