Another day, another rescue! Turtle Belle saved from entanglement at Ghadira Bay
Let's keep our oceans clean!

Francesca Vella

Yesterday morning, the Wildlife Rescue Team received a distress call about a turtle in urgent need of help. The turtle was found in Ghadira, entangled in plastic waste with a wooden stick stuck to it. With challenging weather conditions due to the strong winds, the volunteers knew they needed additional support to carry out a successful rescue.

Thankfully, Civil Protection Malta quickly responded, dispatching a boat to locate the turtle and bring it safely to shore. Once in the hands of trained volunteers, the turtle – now named Belle – was carefully examined. The plastic had wrapped tightly around both of her front flippers, but luckily, the entanglement was not severe enough to cause lasting damage. After an assessment by the rescue team’s vet, they are hopeful that Belle will make a full recovery.

This rescue is yet another reminder of the dangers marine life faces due to plastic pollution. Every sea life creature saved is a testament to the importance of responsible waste disposal and ocean conservation.

It is important to note that all the animals rescued are protected species, and in Malta, it is illegal to keep them as pets. The Wildlife Rescue Team volunteers are specially trained and equipped with the necessary permits to handle and rehabilitate these wild creatures safely.

If you ever come across an injured or endangered wild animal, make sure to contact the Wildlife Rescue Team immediately at 99999505. Your call could save a life!

Wishing Belle the speediest of recoveries!
