All aboard memory lane! Check out this throwback photo of a vintage bus heading to Zurrieq
What a feeling!

Lyndsey Grima

A charming slice of Malta’s transport history has resurfaced on social media, thanks to the Facebook group ‘Iż-Żurrieq u l-madwar – Żurrieq and its surroundings’. A recently shared throwback photo shows a classic red Zurrieq route bus, complete with its driver and two passengers preparing to set off on what was surely a familiar journey at the time.

The image, likely taken several decades ago, captures more than just a moment - it captures a feeling. In the background, two iconic green buses can also be spotted, one clearly marked for Cospicua, evoking memories of Malta’s colourful and characterful public transport era, long before the modern fleets took over the roads.

Members of the group quickly expressed their nostalgia and affection for these images of the past.

Photos like these don’t just show vehicles but they offer a window into Malta’s everyday life, community connections, and simpler times.

Do you remember the time when buses looked like this?
