A tribute to the King of Maltese Carnival! ‘Il-Pampalun’ lives on in float
A fitting tribute to a legend

Francesca Vella

Every year, when the vibrant carnival floats roll out onto the streets, one unmistakable figure stands at the heart of the celebrations - Paul Curmi, affectionately known as ‘Il-Pampalun’. Widely regarded as the King of Maltese Carnival, Paul’s legacy continues to shine brightly, even after his passing in November 2023. This year, his spirit is kept alive through a beautiful tribute designed by Landa Carnival Company, a float that immortalises the man who dedicated his life to Malta’s most colourful feast.

Paul Curmi’s connection to Carnival began at a young age, when he would help his father, Giovanni, craft elaborate carnival floats and grotesque masks. His passion for the celebration only grew stronger over the years, and his involvement expanded beyond the creation of floats to include dance, music, and all aspects of the festivities. His contributions to the Carnival scene were immense, and he became a beloved figure, synonymous with the lively spirit of the Maltese Carnival.

Although Paul ‘Il-Pampalun’ may not be physically present for this weekend’s festivities, his presence is felt in every corner of the celebration. The float created in his honour serves as a powerful reminder of his legacy and the indelible mark he left on Malta’s Carnival culture. As the parade marches on, it’s impossible not to feel that his spirit dances along with the music!

Do you remember his creative costumes?
