It has just been announced that the carnival legend, often referred to as the father of Maltese carnival, Pawlu Curmi ‘il-Pampalun’ has passed away.

Pawlu was born on the 12th December, 1930 at Marsamxett street in Malta’s capital city of Valletta.

He was an impressive artist that pioneered and worked hard to see all kinds of art being represented in Malta’s carnival. From his love to music and dancing, he was the definition of a Maltese carnival icon.

Many soon took to social media with heartfelt tributes on this sad day.

“Thank you for everything you did for us and for bring joy to everyone. I love and we’ll never forget you King of Carnival”, his grandson Clayton Caruana wrote.

“A heartfelt thank you for everything you have done. But mostly thank you for your sincere friendship. You were everyone’s friend”, musician Mark Spiteri Lucas expressed.

“The carnival can never be the same without Pawlu l-Pampalun”, the president of the European Union Parliament Roberta Metsola said.

Many carnival dance and float companies also flooded social media with thanks to this legend for all he has done to the art they love so much.

Condolences to all his friends and family!
