A tradition that travels! The Journey of the Magi returns to bring Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem to a close

As Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem draws its curtains on another much-loved edition, the nativity village will once again close with one of its most meaningful moments: the Journey and Adoration of the Magi.
Taking place on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th January, this special Epiphany tradition marks the official finale of the 16th edition of Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem – one of the islands’ most popular festive traditions that has locals and tourists flocking to the sister island in droves.
Over the Epiphany weekend, the Magi will travel across Malta and Gozo, visiting town squares, hospitals, and homes for the elderly. From Mosta to Birgu, Mater Dei to Ħamrun, and eventually back to Għajnsielem, the journey is designed to reach people where they are, sharing messages of hope, joy, and peace along the way.
The weekend culminates with a triumphal entrance into Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem, a moment that traditionally draws large crowds and brings the entire nativity experience full circle.
This year’s Journey of the Magi introduces a touching new element. Children are being invited to write short messages reflecting on courage, solidarity, peace, war, or any theme they feel is important. These messages can be handed directly to the Magi during their visits, or dropped off at Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem itself.
In a beautiful gesture that connects the local with the global, all collected messages will later be sent to Pope Leo XIV, allowing children’s voices from Malta and Gozo to travel far beyond our shores.
If you haven’t yet made your way to the nativity village, or if you simply want one last wander through its streets, Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem will remain open on Thursday 1st January, Friday 2nd January and Sunday 4th January.
