We've searched high and low for the best ice-cream spots in Malta (what a drag, right?), and here they are: six of our absolute favourites!
1. Sotto Zero, Bugibba
Probably the most popular ice-cream shop on the island, Sotto Zero in Bugibba has become an institution. They do waffle cones, normal cones, ice cream in brioche buns, granitas and – if you’re the sort who hates a mess – even standard cups. Whatever the receptacle, however, what is constant is the creamy, moreish taste.
2. Amorino, Valletta
There’s not a day which goes by that you don’t see long lines outside this Republic Street stop over. Tourists and locals flock to taste the flowered ice-cream gems offered by Amorino – and it’s not hard to understand why. The flavours on offer range from cantalope melon, amarena cream and blackcherries as well as blueberry cheesecake – all served in a petal-like form. The only downside is that it can sometimes look too beautiful to eat!
3. Busy Bee Gelateria, Msida
A confection heaven, Busy Bee has been delighting their loyal clientele for many a decade, and they are usually known for their stunning desserts (their cannoli are an absolute must!). But, even the most avid Busy Bee-er might not have tasted the ice-creams which can be found in their gelateria, just a few metres down from their iconic coffee shop. Traditional in flavour, knockout in taste, these are gelatos you’re not going to want to miss.
4. Gelateria Dolce Latte, Marsascala
If you want all the taste – but none of the guilt which comes with it (or maybe just some) this place is for you. Gelateria Dolce Latte prides itself on serving a wide selection of vegan certified gelato. And, all of their ice-creams are made from coconut oil, with no added sugar. Now there's an excuse to have more than one!
5. Haagen Dazs, Valletta
This legendary American ice-cream brand finally made it to our shores. While we’ve been lucky enough to be able to buy the brand at many local supermarkets for some time now, the outlet opened in Valletta not so long ago, offering pedestrians crowding Republic Street the opportunity to pop into for a nice cold one – ice-cream, that is. Their premium cones and cups are not necessarily simple – but they pack a flavour punch!
6. Rivareno Gelato, St Julian’s & Sliema
Gelato made fresh? Daily? Not possible, I hear you say! But, Rivereno Gelato promises to do exactly that. And, with two outlets in central parts of the island – Sliema and St Julian’s – you’ll never have to go far for your fix. These guys are also masters of inventive treats, such as gelato-filled pandoro and brioche filled with fresh cream. How about that to start your day?
