Living on a small island has its definite advantages. One of these is to watch the sunrise or sunset over the horizon on a daily basis, if you want to! Usually you would head east, of course, yet there are some special spots that deserve to be shared elsewhere.
Qala, Gozo
Few places will inspire as much as this spot in Gozo. Head towards St Anthony's Battery in Qala, Gozo, for a moonscape-like setting overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. A few fishermen in boats will be your only other sign of life as the sun rises to bask the Earth in its life-giving golden light.
L-Ahrax tal-Mellieha
Trees abound at l-Ahrax tal-Mellieha in Malta. If you like your blue sea and sky with a touch of green and a sense of life's glorious abundance, this is the place. Also a rather secluded spot except for a few campers, head here for a picnic at dawn and start your day full of vitality.
Ta’ Fra Ben, Bugibba
If you live in the area of Bugibba and can't make a journey in the dark towards the light of dawn, this sunrise spot is right on your doorstep. Watching the sun rise while listening to easy tunes at the Reggae Bar located there is not a thing to bypass either.
Sliema Esplenade
The same goes for those who live in the Sliema area. The urban sprawl gives way to a wide open space between sea and sky, and the emerging light of the sun with its morning colours bring with it a reminder of the ineffable and incomparable beauty of nature, which persists no matter what.
Valletta
If you're in the mood for romance, there's nothing more enchanting than a sunrise with the Valletta skyline in view. The famous skyline has earned a reputation for its utter beauty that's only highlighted by the golden glow of the sun in the morning. Head to Gzira or Ta' Xbiex for the full view.
Xghajra
Due to its seclusion and little light pollution, this is a favourite spot of The Astronomical Society of Malta for watching the moon and stars rise over the horizon. Since the sun and moon share the same space on that magical line, get here for sunrise if you're in the south of the island.
