5 fountains around the Maltese Islands that are worth a visit
And some even dance!

1. Triton Fountain, Valletta

The Triton Fountain is one of Malta’s most famous fountains. Located on the periphery of City Gate, just outside Valletta, the fountain depicts three bronze Tritons holding up a basin. It was constructed back in the '50s but had deteriorated in subsequent decades. Thankfully, just last year, the fountain received some desperate TLC and was restored to its former glory and is now one of Valletta’s most prominent landmarks.

2. San Anton Gardens, Balzan

Found within San Anton Palace (the President’s official residence), these gardens steal the show. Featuring graceful walkways, sculptures, and an aviary, you’d think this is some Queen’s palace! Royalty or not, the best part of the gardens (in my opinion at least), is the ornamental pond and fountain which is home to a family of ducks and swans. Cute, right?

3. Smart City, Kalkara

Smart City’s fountain is a musical and dancing fountain used for aesthetic purposes – and boy, does it attract attention! It’s best known performance saw water - in all shades - spinning and moving to Giacomo Puccini’s Nessun Dorma. Just imagine the dramatics!

4. St George’s Square, Valletta

St George’s Square, or Misrah San Gwann in Maltese, is Valletta’s largest and most prominent square. Located in the heart of the city, St George’s Square is right in front of the impressive Grand Master’s Palace. It first took shape in the 17th century, though its appearance has changed over time. The fountain - an underground affair with little spurts here and there - hasn’t always been there and it is practically invisible unless you look hard. It dances every hour on the hour during special occasions and in the summer time.

5. University fountain, Msida

While the University fountain hasn’t been in operation for quite some time, every year it gets, erm… a make-over. Come November, when graduation season hits, graduates from various courses slip in colouring and soap, leaving their final mark on uni. I guess you can say it has become a kind of tradition!
