Here are just a few of those places in Malta we just love to enjoy in autumn’s cooler weather.
When the weather is hot, most of the islanders and the island’s visitors take to the coast to indulge in the cooler sea breeze and dips in the sea. But come autumn, we can return to those wonderful places that are just too hot to visit in summer; where we love to enjoy a pleasant walk, a relaxing picnic or a lovely vista. Here are just a few of those places in Malta we just love to enjoy in autumn’s cooler weather.
1. Buskett Gardens
The shade of the trees might be appealing in summer, but most locals still consider the beach a more attractive option throughout the hot months. Autumn finds us returning to one of our favourite picnic locations on the island. Paths take you through groves of fruit trees and a stroll along a stream into the wilder growth in the heart of the valley overlooked by Verdala Palace. Plus, there are plenty of places to settle down for some quiet time or a game of frisbee.
2. Dingli Cliffs
Another cooler weather favourite is a walk along the top of the impressive Dingli cliffs. During summer, the sun beats down mercilessly in this tree-less place. But when the heat subsides, the open view of sea and sky plus the sunset on the horizon from a height of 220 metres is a sight one never tires of. You can even enjoy a lunch or dinner in the open air at the single restaurant available here.
3. Bahrija
Another amazing spot for a walk is Bahrija, which is even more beautiful when the brown dried-out landscape returns to a vibrant green come a little rain. In any case, the moonscape-like coast below Bahrija village sparks the imagination. It’s not easy to reach the sea below, so autumn wards off the unsatiated temptation to cool off.
4. L-Ahrax tal-Mellieha
This wonderful place is as versatile as can be. Plenty of trees perched on a headland make this location wonderful for a picnic with a vista. The heat has subsided enough to make camping more bearable. And the sea is within reach if it inspires you to take the plunge. L-Ahrax tal-Mellieha is more like an all-year-round favourite, but it is best enjoyed in autumn and spring.
5. Wied Babu
Down south, few places inspire time spent in nature as much as Wied Babu in Zurrieq. Requiring an over-the-wall entry to private property (that the land proprietors kindly share with the public), Wied Babu is a true gem of Maltese nature. Here you’ll find people strolling, enjoying a picnic, rock climbing the steep valley walls or slacklining right across it. You can even make your way to the mouth of the valley where it opens to the sea. It's an evergreen hub of relaxation and activity that’s just delightful, especially in autumn and spring.
These are just some of our personal favourite nature haunts to enjoy during autumn in Malta. Which are yours?
