15 places in Malta & Gozo we definitely don't visit enough
Lesser-known, less frequented spots!

Melanie Drury

If you don't visit these places often, make sure you do! You get to appreciate the Maltese Islands with the wonder in the eyes of tourist, take in their unique beauty and experience the undoubtly wonderful emotions they will evoke in you.

Malta

Don't you find, while living in Malta, that you tend to always visit the same places? It's almost like you have an in-built compass that always points to the same places, time and time again. Such a pity, when the island is small enough to make it all within easy reach. We may think of the other side of the island as 'far away' - that's the island mentality - yet an hour's drive is a laughable journey time to almost any visitor to our shores. So if you're from the north, head south, and vice versa!

1. Selmun, Mellieha

Feel like exploring? From the beautiful historic castle in the area of Selmun, Mellieha, head right to Fort Campbell for breathtaking views of Mistra Bay and walk all the way down to the sea near St Paul's Islands, or head down towards secluded Mgiebah Bay on the other side.

2. Bahrija

Take to the rocky coast below the remote village of Bahrija. Only sea and sky here but for the carved limestone rock formations. If you want solitude, you'll find it here.

Nature as far as the eye can see? Yes, it is possible in Malta here at il-Kuncizzjoni, on the outskirts of Bahrija. Put your walking shoes on and just keep walking.

4. L-Imtahleb

Also in the outskirts of Bahrija, l-Imtahleb has it all: steep cliffs leading to the shore far below, weathered limestone and lush, green surroundings. Just as perfect for a quiet sunset in silent contemplation or a picnic with family or friends.

7. Il-Maqluba, Qrendi

Discover some of the mysteries of the Universe at il-Maqluba, a sinkhole with a wonderful legend. Just as amazing is the experience of looking over treetops rising from its depths or the adventure of venturing to the bottom of it.

8. Wied Babu, Zurrieq

Begin your trek through a wonderfully lush and varied valley, clamber down over some rocks and finish off with a swim in the crystal, azure waters at the mouth of the valley. How's that for a good dose of nature?

9. Delimara

Il-Hofriet and il-Kalanka make great alternatives to the more popular St Peter's Pool, all sporting white cliffs and crystal waters. Xrobb L-Ghagin gives you a good dose of trees. Add a scattering of forts and archaeological sites, plus a dashing view of Marsaxlokk fishing village, and you'll know why this is a great place to put your explorer's hat on.

10. Marsascala

Definitely underrated due to the widely publicised attraction of Marsaxlokk, go to Marsascala to avoid the crowds and enjoy its many bars and restaurants, St Thomas Bay and the nearby white cliffs. Perfect for Sunday lunch with a gentle stroll to finish.

Gozo

Gozo is made up of so much more than Victoria, Marsalforn, Xlendi and Dwejra! The island is virtually a paradise anywhere you go, but these particular places deserve a definite mention here.

11. Wied il-Ghasri

Do you want to go off-the-beaten-track to somewhere secluded and full of wonderful natural treasures? Swim along the serpentine seashore leading away from the pebble beach at Wied il-Ghasri, check out the salt pans above it and see if you can find one of the most awesome sea caves ever.

13. Wardija Punic Temple, San Lawrenz

Here's where you feel on top of the world in Gozo. Few places on the island offer views as spectacular as this. The cliffs are breathtaking from this perspective, plus there's an archaelogical site (on private land) to add interest to the area. Visit also San Raflu lake nearby (yes, a lake!).

14. Lunzjata Valley, Kercem

In need of a good dose of green beauty and the sound of birds to help you unwind? Lush Lunzjata is such all the year round thanks to its location between several hills. Did we mention that it is very beautiful? Indeed, it is.

15. Mgarr ix-Xini

The whole world has seen this place in Brad Pitt's movie By The Sea, yet this beautiful location is right on your doorstep. How long has it been since you visited? Not only is the bay pretty, the sea clear and the place wonderfully secluded, it also sits between a gorgeous coast with great views of Malta and Comino, and one of the most impressive valleys on the Maltese Islands. You'll be wondering why you stayed away.

Are there any of these that you've never, ever been to? Because I must admit some of them were fairly recent discoveries for me. Isn't it exciting to think that there are always new places to explore even on such a small island?
