10 very Maltese songs that every local loves to sing along to
Don’t bother trying to deny it.

Every country has that selection of songs which everyone knows the words to. And while you’re either on the love or loathe team, Malta has got its own selection of songs every local sings along to – cringeworthy or not!

1. Xemx by The Tramps

At the top of the leader board is obviously Xemx. Sung at every wedding, disco party, and drunken night out, Xemx is one heck of a popular song and it’s very hard not to break out into song when this comes on.

2. L-ahhar bidwi f’Wied il-Ghasel by Sammy Bartolo

The heartfelt serenade is one we crack out when we’ve got all the feels, especially during our nights out on the town.

3. Marigold by Winter Moods

This is a CLASSIC wedding song and so many locals have played this as their first dances. It’s even more romantic if you have Ivan Grech singing it on stage. #Goals.

4. Il-Festa by Mary Rose Mallia

All together now: bandaloooori koooollha lwieeeen. Yup – another infamous drunk song for ya to try out at your next karaoke.

5. Lanca Gejja

This one’s a traditional ghanja. While an integral part of Maltese music, this one has also fallen into our drunken nights’ repertoire. #Oops

6. Inti Djamant by The Tramps

This song will make every Maltese person want to get on that ferry and spend the week in Gozo. The sister island is truly a diamond in the mediterranean and this song proves it.

7. 7th Wonder

Organising a throwback party? This is a DEFINITE addition to your playlist. You’ll be acting out that ‘reality’ and blowing those sprinkles - jew x’kellha!

8. Mur Hallini by Freddie Portelli

Malta’s King of Rock ‘n’ Roll is a legend for this song. And if you’re in the mood to groove, this is the very Maltese song to put on.

9. Viva Malta by Freddie Portelli

Another legendary (and very Maltese) song by Malta’s King of Rock ‘n’ Roll is Viva Malta, literally praising Malta and the Maltese.

10. I Do by Fabrizio Faniello

Cringe alert! But we love it just the same. Fabrizio took I Do to the Eurovision stage and while it didn’t rank great, it left quite the impression on us Maltese. And in case you were wondering, there are 36 ‘I do’s in the song.
