Zurrieq's hidden wonders! Discover the Cave of thieves and the valley with a quirky name
Malta’s rugged west coast is home to countless hidden gems, and the Department of Information has recently shed light on two of them! Għar Ħallelin, or the Cave of Thieves, is a little-known cave tucked away in Zurrieq’s cliffs on the southern coast. As its name suggests, legend has it that the cave once served as a hideout for smugglers or thieves, adding to its air of mystery.
But the intrigue doesn’t end there! This cave is nestled within Wied Bassasa, a valley whose name has a rather amusing origin story. The name Bassasa closely resembles the Maltese word for passing gas, and for good reason - the valley is known for the loud whistling and rumbling sounds created when the rough sea pushes air through small holes in the rock. It seems Malta’s ancestors had quite a sense of humour!
Reaching these hidden wonders isn’t for the faint-hearted. The hike is challenging, and due to natural erosion, some paths may have deteriorated over time. If you’re planning to explore, sturdy hiking gear is a must, and always assess the terrain carefully before proceeding. Whether you make it to the cave or simply take in the breathtaking views from above, one thing is certain - the adventure that the journey provides will be just as rewarding as the destination!
