Your choice is key! Make this festive season greener with ERA’s sustainable tips
By making small, mindful adjustments, we can significantly reduce our environmental footprint this holiday season.

The festive season is a time of joy, planning, and celebration. However, in the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping and holiday preparations, it’s easy to overlook how our choices affect the environment. By making small, mindful adjustments, we can significantly reduce our environmental footprint this holiday season.

Here are some suggestions by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) to help you make environmentally sustainable choices this festive season.

Food Waste Awareness

Over-purchasing food often leads to unnecessary waste. To combat this, plan meals carefully and buy only what you need. If you find yourself with leftovers, don’t discard them. Instead, repurpose them into new recipes, freeze them for future use, or simply enjoy them later. This not only reduces waste but also saves money and resources.

Mindful Packaging

When grocery shopping, opt for items with minimal or no packaging. Excess packaging contributes to the growing problem of waste. Similarly, be cautious with gift wrapping. Many glossy or glittery wraps are non-recyclable. Choose eco-friendly alternatives such as reusable fabric wraps, recycled paper, or even newspaper for a creative touch.

Reusable Over Disposable

Single-use plastics are among the biggest pollutants of our seas, harming marine life and breaking down into microplastics that enter our food chain. This holiday season, prioritise reusable items over disposable ones. Bring your reusable bags for shopping and invest in durable containers or wrapping options. These small changes collectively make a significant impact.

Responsible Pet Ownership

For those considering a new pet this holiday, remember that pet ownership is a long-term responsibility. Exotic pets, in particular, pose risks to our environment if they escape or are released. Some species, like squirrels or snakes, can thrive in Malta’s climate and disrupt local ecosystems, outcompeting native wildlife. Invasive alien species are illegal to purchase and can cause severe environmental damage. Choose pets wisely, considering their needs and the potential environmental impact.

By embracing these sustainable habits, we can enjoy the festivities while caring for our planet. Let’s make this holiday season not only merry and bright but also green and responsible.

The Environment and Resources Authority wishes everyone a happy, healthy, and sustainable holiday season!
