An unexpected find during excavation works yesterday prompted the intervention of the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM).

A pre-World War I unexploded ordnance (UXO) was discovered at the site, leading to the immediate deployment of the Ammunition & Explosives Squadron from the 3rd Regiment. Specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD), and Divers Platoon were called in to assess the situation.

Upon inspection, the ordnance was confirmed to be a 5.5-inch British Armour-Piercing Solid Shot; a projectile dating back over a century. Despite its age, such munitions can remain dangerous, requiring careful handling by trained professionals.

The UXO was safely extracted and removed from the area, and all necessary precautions were taken to ensure public safety. The site has since been declared secure.

Authorities have reminded contractors and workers to immediately report any suspicious or potentially hazardous objects found during digging or construction works.
