Wow! ‘Extinct’ plant re-appears in Malta at the sand dunes of Ramla tal-Mixquqa
An unexpected and happy discovery.

A plant that was considered extinct has appeared once again at the sand dunes of Ramla tal-Mixquqa after a regeneration project.

The Purple Spurge otherwise known as il-Ġemmugħa tar-Ramel in Maltese showed up once again after the removal of the Giant Reed from the sand dunes after it was thought to be completely extinct from the Maltese islands.

Apart from the purple spurge many plants that were becoming scarce are now healthily growing once again following this regeneration project.

These include the Sea Rocket (Kromb il-Baħar), Sand Restharrow (Broxka tar-Ramel), Sea Daffodil (Pankrazju), Sand Couch (Sikrana tar-Ramel) and many more.

Majjistral Nature and History Park appealed for visitors to not enter the closed off areas and to not litter in order to keep such endangered plants to continue growing.
