Winter’s here! December kicks off with rain, strong winds and a chance of hail in Malta
The much-awaited season has arrived in the final month of 2024

Francesca Vella

Yesterday, 1st December, marked the start of meteorological winter, the season that brings the coldest, wettest, windiest, shortest days and longest nights of the year. Although astronomical winter begins just past the mid-December mark, anyone out and about yesterday can confirm the shift towards winter right on cue, with a noticeable drop in temperature and the wet, windy weather.

This coming week promises more of the same, with maximum temperatures rarely reaching 20 degrees, and a nighttime real feel as low as 9 degrees! The showers the islands experienced over last weekend are expected to continue throughout this week, starting tonight with isolated thunderstorms, and reaching a peak between Thursday and Friday, when rain and a chance of hail are forecast to hit the islands.

Strong winds are expected between Friday and Saturday too, reaching gusts of force 7. As this often impacts swell in the sea and ferry services, make sure to keep updated if you plan on any boat trips!

Are you enjoying the shift to winter?
