When it rains, it floods! Here are 6 places to hide when the floods hit Malta
Wellies, rubber duckies and possibly even a canoe might come in handy here

Kristina Cassar Dowling

If you’re a local, you’re probably pretty accustomed to the flooding that takes place when the rain hits our little islands, whether you've lived here your whole life or not.

Flood

The situation can get so dire, some areas are equipped with flood alarms belting out the loudest siren, prompting everyone to get off the streets to a place of refuge which will keep their socks dry for the duration of the downpour. To help you out, here are a few surefire places where you can keep dry... we hope!

The cinema

Head to your favourite cinema complex, get yourself a bucket of popcorn and settle in to watch a few good movie. When the rain hits, you may be here for a while.

A restaurant at the top of a hill

Why not make the most of the grim weather? You have to eat right? Pick a good resto and get your eats on. Your best bet would be to hit the Mdina area - you need to get away from any of Malta's valleys. Once you find a spot, you'll be able to watch the rain as you devour a chocolate cake for dessert.

Your bedroom… unless it’s an underground spot in Birkirkara

Alternatively, you could chill in your bedroom till the rain decides to leave our little rock in peace. Use the time to veg-out, give your room a good tidy or get creative and move all the furniture around till you’re satisfied with the outcome. Noisy work, but best done during a thunderstorm.

Your bestie's penthouse

We’ve all got that friend who lives in a glorious penthouse and you'll surely be safe when you’re so close to the clouds. But, the garage may prove a bit tricky in the downpour - especially if it's underground.

Your office (unfortunately)

Most companies are aware flooding is a problem on the island, so they are usually equipped with measures to prevent inconvenience. This means they rarely flood and urge you to vacate the premises. You will might be safe, tucked in your little cubby hole, but your sanity might be questioned.

A super hotel suite

Book a top hotel room, hit the mini-bar, jump on the bed and have a good time. If you're lucky, the spa will be fully functioning too - no need to go outside if you can throw your own party indoors. FUN!

Whatever you do, when the floods hit, you’d better find yourself a spot high above ground level, with a nifty view from where to watch the chaos reign. Just keep safe and have your wits about you, for you never know what might happen!
