What a throwback! Xlendi Tower in Gozo has been watching over the bay since the 1600s
During World War II the tower operated as an observation post, manned by the Coast Police
Overlooking the popular bay of Xlendi, which is often packed with both swimmers and boats in the summer months, stands a prominent watchtower. The Xlendi Tower is one of the ten watchtowers built between 1637 and 1652, during the rule of Grandmaster Lascaris.
It is also the oldest of the four surviving watchtowers on Gozo, the three others being Dwejra Tower, Mġarr ix-Xini Tower and Sopu Tower (located between San Blas and Daħlet Qorrot in Nadur).
Xlendi Tower is 12 metres tall and similar in structure to the other watchtowers, but has the unique characteristic of a platform extending out towards the sea, providing the perfect viewpoint of the gorgeous seascape.
