What a shot! Stunning photo by Maltese photographer captures the hunting skill of the Great Cormorant
If you happen to be feeling uninspired, taking a walk in nature may just help to revive your sense of wonder!
The talented and undoubtedly patient photographer Alfred Vella has managed to capture some incredible shots of a Great Cormorant (‘Margun’ in Maltese) in the precise moment it seized what seems to be an eel of sorts (resembling a Conger Eel, or ‘Gringu’) in its mouth.
The Great Cormorant is known to be a regular autumn or winter migrant in Malta, mostly seen migrating in singles or in small flocks. An unusually large flock, however, made up of a whopping 80 birds, was spotted once from Qawra on the 21st of February in 2001 – the largest flock ever seen over the islands.
The birds often make use of the Salina, Ghadira and Simar Nature Reserves as feeding and resting spots – if you check them out, you might just be lucky enough to spot a scene like Alfred did!
Have you ever come across such a sight?
