What a find! Roman Pottery discovered during trenching works in Salini Road Naxxar
The artefacts will be preserved and possibly re-constructed.
During works carried out by the Water Services Corporation in Salini Road in Naxxar, an agricultural trench filled with pottery from the Roman period was discovered.
The Superintendence of Cultural Heritage was soon notified by the archaeological monitor on site.
Agricultural trenches are frequently discovered during such works but it’s not often for pottery to be found. In fact, it is still yet unknown what the purpose of it being place there is.
The pottery included, a a large open bowl, within which a cooking pot with a lid, a small plate and a jug had been placed.
When the road was first made decades ago, the pottery was unfortunately compressed causing it to be partly fragmented.
Thanks to the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, the artefacts will be conserved and re-constructed if possible.
You’ll also get the chance to see the pottery live at the upcoming event for European Archaeology Days at the Salina Natural Reserve, this Saturday 17th June.
