Well done! Profs. Sciberras awarded MSA Gold Medal 2024 for contributions to art history & heritage conservation
The award will be conferred by the President of Malta in a private ceremony on the 5th of December.
The Malta Society of Arts (MSA) has announced Professor Keith Sciberras as the recipient of its prestigious Gold Medal for 2024. This honour recognises his exceptional contributions to the field of art history and his pivotal role in the conservation of the historic Palazzo de La Salle, the MSA’s headquarters.
The award will be conferred by H.E. Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, in a private ceremony on the 5th of December, 2024.
Born in 1970, Profs. Sciberras is an esteemed art historian and curator who has significantly advanced the study of Baroque art, particularly the works of Caravaggio and Mattia Preti. Serving as a professor in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Malta, he has published extensively on Roman Baroque sculpture and Italian Baroque painting. His groundbreaking research has illuminated the patronage patterns of prominent Italian artists and redefined the understanding of Caravaggio’s final years in Malta, Naples, and Sicily.
Profs. Sciberras has also curated several international exhibitions, including the celebrated Caravaggio and Paintings of Realism in Malta (2007) and Diplomazija Astuta at the 2022 Venice Biennale. His innovative work often bridges the gap between contemporary art and old masters, blending immersive experiences with historical insights.
In addition to his academic achievements, Profs. Sciberras has been instrumental in the preservation of Malta’s cultural heritage. His leadership in conserving the Sala dei Cavalieri at Palazzo de La Salle exemplifies his dedication to art’s enduring legacy. Recognised globally, he has lectured at prestigious institutions, including the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
