Well done! Maltese short film ‘Morning Star’ based on true local story flying high at international festivals
This true story was also adapted into a stage musical a few years ago, with Larissa Bonaci and Polly March in key roles
The film ‘Morning Star’, produced by and starring Maltese actor Larissa Bonaci as the main role, has taken international film festivals by storm, landing awards such as Best Director of a Drama at the London Directors Award, and making the Official Selection at several other festivals, including Hollywood Shortsfest and the New York International Women Festival.
The film’s most recent achievement is a nomination for the award of Best Short Film at the Marbella International Film Festival in Spain, where the short was screened alongside other films from all over world.
‘Morning Star’ is based on the true story of love during wartime. It follows Christina Ratcliffe, a British singer who arrives in Malta in 1937 to entertain the troops. She soon falls deeply in love with RAF pilot Warby as the looming threat of the Second World War darkens their island paradise.
This poignant story was also adapted into the stage musical 'Star of Strait Street' a few years ago, with Larissa Bonaci and Polly March in key roles. Polly March's recent passing has left the local theatre community mourning her loss.
The film features a predominantly Maltese cast, including Nanette Brimmer, Narcy Calamatta, and Joe Depasquale. It was directed by award-winning filmmaker Zara Balfour, who co-wrote the script with Larissa Bonaci and Rachel Kaden.
Congratulations to the entire team and best of luck for the rest of the film festival circuit!
