Well done! Maltese runner Luke Micallef breaks national record in Bologna 10km road race
The 35-year-old athlete Luke Micallef has been setting the bar in Maltese athletics for years, and 2025 seems to be no exception! Yesterday, Luke delivered a stellar performance at the Interporto Race in Bologna, Italy, smashing the national record for a 10km road race with an impressive time of 29:26.
Competing on a World Athletics-certified route, Luke secured third place in the race, finishing just two seconds behind the winner. While the result is still pending formal ratification, this timing breaks the previous national record of 29:39, set by Jordan Gusman on the Gold Coast in 2022. In a social media post, Luke thanked coach Ivan Russu and Rebecca Falzon for their unwavering support in his athletic journey.
Saber Zinoubi from Tunisia took first place in the 10km race at a time of 29:24, while Luca Magri from Italy arrived second at 29:26.

Luke Micallef already holds the national record in the 3000m steeplechase, so this will be one more honour to his name!
Congratulations, Luke!
