Well done! Maltese athlete, Beppe Grillo, confirms sprint dominance with double win at National Championships
The athlete also set a national record in the 100m earlier this season.
Beppe Grillo reaffirmed his status as Malta’s premier sprinter with a spectacular double victory at the National Championships hosted by Athletics Malta.
The athlete, who recently set a national record in the 100m earlier this season, continued his impressive form by winning the 100m in 10.46 seconds, setting a new Championship Record. He finished ahead of Luke Bezzina, who clocked in at 10.81 seconds. Beppe’s dominance extended to the 200m, where he secured the top spot with a time of 21.35 seconds, again beating Luke Bezzina, who finished in 22.15 seconds.

The National Championships, held over three days, attracted more than 160 athletes and witnessed several championship and youth category records being set.
One of the most thrilling races was the women’s 100m, where Claire Azzopardi edged out Charlotte Wingfield with times of 11.77 seconds and 11.79 seconds, respectively. Thea Parnis Coleiro impressed with a 12.06-second finish, setting the best time ever in the Under 20 and Under 18 categories. Charlotte Wingfield found redemption in the 200m, dominating the event with a time of 23.88 seconds.

Jared Micallef and Gina McNamara, fresh from their success at the Championships of Small States of Europe in Gibraltar, triumphed in the 800m with times of 1:48.69 and 2:14.26, respectively.
Luke Micallef also had a standout performance, winning the 3000m steeplechase in a Championship Record time of 9:05.49, and the 3000m with a time of 8:23.61. Notably, Isaac Luke Scicluna set the best Under 16 time in the 3000m, finishing in 9:10.92.

Dillon Cassar confirmed his 5000m title, while Charlton Debono claimed his seventh 10000m title, completing the race in 32:44.31. In the throws, Bradley Mifsud set a Championship Record in the discus with a throw of 56.26 meters.
The long jump saw Romeo Flavio achieve a personal best of 6.75 meters, surpassing Ian Paul Grech. Rachela Pace won the women’s long jump with a 5.95-meter leap. Nicolai Bonello set a Championship record in the pole vault with a jump of 4.70 meters, capping off a season in which he broke the national record multiple times.
Overall, the National Championships showcased the immense talent and competitive spirit of Maltese athletes, setting the stage for future successes on both national and international levels.
