Haley Bugeja solidified her status as one of Malta's all-time football greats, scoring her 21st international goal in a 1-1 draw against Hungary.

The goal elevated her to second place on the national team's all-time scoring list, surpassing many of Malta's past legends and leaving her just six goals shy of Dorianne Theuma’s record of 27.

The match, Malta’s second friendly against Hungary in preparation for the UEFA Nations League, was a display of resilience and determination. After suffering a 3-1 loss in the first encounter, Malta came into this game with a clear intent to improve, and the result showed a marked progression.

Despite Hungary dominating the early stages with their counterattacks and technical precision, the Maltese defense held firm, with goalkeeper Giulia D’Antuono delivering a standout performance. She denied several close-range efforts, including a superb save from Diana Csányi in the first half.

Hungary eventually broke the deadlock just after halftime. Malta, however, responded immediately. Maria Farrugia was brought down in the penalty area, a decision that sparked debate as the Hungarian defender appeared to have made a clean challenge.

Haley Bugeja stepped up to take the spot kick and converted with composure, marking a significant milestone in her career and drawing Malta level in the 53rd minute.

For Malta, the match was not only about the result but also about development ahead of their upcoming UEFA Nations League campaign in February. Competing in League C, the team will face challenging opposition, and these friendlies against Hungary, a League B team, provided valuable experience.

The game also marked a special milestone for Gabriella Zahra, who celebrated her 60th cap for the national team. The Birkirkara midfielder started the match before being substituted at halftime as Tesse introduced Kailey Willis to add attacking impetus.

At just 19 years old, Haley Bugeja has become the centerpiece of Malta’s attack, consistently delivering on the international stage.

With her 21st goal, she has firmly established herself as a player to watch, both for her record-breaking potential and her ability to influence the team’s fortunes. As Malta looks to the future, Haley’s contributions will undoubtedly remain central to their ambitions.

Well done, Haley!
