Wartime heritage! Local vlogger explores hidden WWII air raid shelter in Pembroke
You can get to this shelter after going down four meters worth of stairs!

Local vlogger Pierre Farrugia took on another exciting adventure, exploring a World War II air raid shelter in Pembroke. Known for uncovering hidden gems across the island, Pierre's latest exploration dives deep into Malta’s wartime history.

This particular shelter, which Pierre notes may have once been used in conjunction with a nearby helicopter pad, is cleverly concealed and almost invisible from the road.

After descending approximately four meters down a flight of stairs, visitors are greeted with a series of 90-degree turns. These sharp bends were strategically designed to reduce the force of bomb blasts, providing additional protection for those inside.

Pierre describes finding a short corridor with stairs on either side, leading to two rooms. Sadly, both rooms are currently littered with debris, a stark reminder of how easily important historical sites can be neglected. Pierre emphasises the importance of preserving such places, as they are an integral part of Malta’s rich heritage.

At the end of the corridor, an escape hatch with steel rungs provides an alternate way out, further illustrating the careful planning that went into constructing these shelters.

Pierre’s exploration serves as both an adventure and a call to action to respect and protect Malta’s historical sites for future generations.
