Viva Santa Katerina! A 100-year-old photo shows the statue of Saint Catherine being laid on its pedestal
Many locals and tourists will be flocking to Zurrieq village this week to attend the long-awaited local Saint Catherine feast.
This photo shared by ‘Zurrieq and its Surroundings’ was taken over 104 years ago, in October 1929 and the statue of Saint Catherine was laid on its new pedestal in Churchill Square.
The shot shows many locals and devotees of Saint Catherine as they posed in front of the village’s new statue.
The statue itself was made by the artist Mariono Gerada while the pedestal was designed by Carmelo Tonna from Rabat.
20 years later, further sculpting and electric lighting were added to the pedestal through the initiative of Father Leonard Mallia.
The statue itself is way older than the pedestal, having been on display since 1814 between Saint Catherine's Band Club and the church in the same square. It was only in 1929, that the statue was placed on its new pedestal, where it still stands today.
