‘Vanishing Point’: Madeleine Gera’s multi-themed art exhibition to open next month in Floriana
The exhibition will take visitors from Greek mythology to the streets of Valletta
Palm Court at the Phoenicia Hotel in Floriana often plays host to works of art produced by local artists, and October will bring another opportunity for visitors to explore the talent of one such artist – Madeleine Gera – in her exhibition ‘Vanishing Point’.
The exhibition will be one with several sub-themes, tied together by the artist’s exploration of the human condition, environmental issues, and the complex relationship between past and present.
Greek mythology pervades the artist’s work, showing up in mythological references, such as ‘Medusa’ and ‘Calypso in Gozo’ in her commentary on local issues, such as pollution and over-development.
In relation to this theme, Madeleine has also created a series of paintings under the title ‘Urban Rhythm’, focusing on the beauty of the urban world with particular emphasis on her home city, Valletta. The works in this particular series offer a cheerful contrast to the more sombre themes explored in the rest of the exhibition, highlighting the dual nature of urban life.
Nature also features heavily in the artist’s work, with several pieces reflecting the joy nature brings to humanity while underscoring the fragile balance between human life and the nature that surrounds it.

Madeleine Gera uses her talent, honed through numerous local and international exhibitions, to face the viewer with challenging dilemmas about the present and the future one wishes to create with their own actions. Her work has been displayed in Westchester County, New York, Florence, and at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, ‘Reporting from the Front’.
These are only some of the fascinating themes Madeleine Gera explores in her works – for more, visit ‘Vanishing Point’, curated by Melanie Erixon, at the Phoenicia’s Palm Court between the 4th and 31st of October.
