Carnival is one of the most anticipated festivities of the year in the Maltese Islands, with some enthusiasts spending the entire year working on their costume or float in preparation for February. This year’s edition, having come a little later than usual due to Easter’s later date, has provided even more anticipation than usual. And yet - it’s almost here!
Although officially celebrated between the 28th of February and the 4th of March, festivities kick off this Sunday with the Hamrun parade. But what can the public expect from the Valletta and Floriana celebrations this year?
First off, you can definitely expect company. Thousands of locals and tourists will gather for this beloved tradition, with some even travelling to Malta just to experience it firsthand. And it will definitely be worth travelling for - this year, the official program will include 18 competitive dance companies, 17 floats, the King's Float Commission, 5 installations and a masquerade, to celebrate in style!
Another highlight is the return of the much-loved ‘Qarcilla’, a satirical play traditionally performed during Carnival. This year, it will be brought to life with a script by Michael Spagnol (Kelma Kelma) and directed by Joseph Galea. The performance will take place in Triq l-Ordinanza in Valletta, promising a good dose of witty humour and local charm.
