We caught up with multi-award winning stylist Malcolm Gauci to talk about his dream career and get the lowdown on what goes on behind the scenes on his shoots, featured in big name local magazines and campaigns! Here's what he had to share with Guide Me Malta.

You are a well recognised and award winning stylist, what does your job entail?

"First of all, I’m not a designer. I create looks for fashion editorials, music videos, celebrities and adverts, but that does not necessarily mean that I design the outfits myself. Styling fashion editorials and music videos has no boundaries and I often have a lot of creative leeway. However, with celebrities and adverts usually there are guidelines and other restrictions that I need to keep in mind."

How did you get to the position you are at now?

"I started photo modelling some years back, and, although I used to love it, I was always particularly intrested in styling. I still remember my very first editorial (please don’t look it up!), and the huge support I receieved from brands, designers and other creatives in the field. Since then I’ve worked hard to keep myself updated and produce work that is up to par to with the 'real' world of fashion."

What does your job involve? What is a day in the life of a stylist like on set and how do you prepare for a shoot?

"Every shoot usually starts off with a mood-board of what I would be looking for with regards to that specific project. I then usually get in touch with the brands that most suit the project and eventually choose the items needed. On set, things can get pretty stressful. I have to make sure that everything works together, including hair and makeup. It’s also important for me to be on the lookout for any damages that may be caused to the clothing."

Sounds like fun! What are your best styling tips?

"Never underestimate the power of accessories and jewellery. These can elevate your look or completely change the whole mood. If you’re not used to tucking in your tops, I’d suggest you try it out! It’s a fashion statement that can bring out the neat or rebellious side of you."

"And finally, layering. Finish off your look by adding key pieces such as an oversized blazer or jacket. Although it’s not always easy to master, as you have to be really keen with proportions, I do believe that there’s a distinct art to layered pieces."

Great stuff! What new trends are looking forward to seeing this year?

"The eighties trend is going to be huge this coming season! Although I’m not someone who wears 80’s inspired fits all the time, I’m obsessed with exeggarated shoulder pads and the whole Studio 54 vibe. Tailoring is one trend that I’ve started to be on the look out for in recent years due to the new silhouttes being created - especially those at Balenciaga and Dior."

How would you describe your own style and what are your favourite things to wear?

"This is always a tricky question. I can’t really describe my style in words as it really differs from one day to another. Having said that, I do opt for more streetwear pieces as they’re both practical and effortless."

And finally, what three pieces or products would you take with you to a desert island?

"Sunglasses, moisturizer and underwear, of course!"

Thank You Malcolm! We look forward to seeing the results of your next shoot!
