‘This is Me’! Malta’s Aġenzija Sapport unveils first-ever Carnival float professionally made by people with disabilities
With February flying by, Carnival fever is officially in the air! In just two weeks, the streets will come alive with music, colour, and - of course - Malta’s iconic floats. But this year, there’s something extra special to look forward to. Aġenzija Sapport is making history with a one-of-a-kind project - a professionally crafted Carnival float and dance performance created by people with disabilities, all under the inspiring theme 'This is Me'.

This project not only offers a space of artistic expression for people with disabilities, but also shows the importance of inclusion in society through traditional Maltese culture and celebrations. For the first time ever, individuals with disabilities are leading the charge in designing and building a Carnival float at a professional level, making a powerful statement about visibility and participation in the community.
At the Ħal Far Day Centre, a group of 16 individuals with disabilities, alongside 10 dedicated staff members, have been preparing a special choreographed dance that will incorporate Maltese Sign Language. This adds an extra layer of meaning, allowing messages of inclusion and personal expression to be shared in a truly unique way.

Meanwhile, over 30 participants from 10 different Aġenzija Sapport centres have been busy in a Floriana warehouse, bringing their float to life. Working in rotating groups, they have been cutting, painting, and assembling since October, ensuring that everyone has a hand in the creative process. To make things even more special, around 40 participants have also been designing costumes and props, all using recycled materials.
Audiences will get the chance to see the float in action during Carnival, with appearances in Ħamrun on February 23rd, Żurrieq on February 27th, and Valletta on March 1st and 3rd. Whether you’re cheering from the sidelines or dancing along, this is a Carnival moment you won’t want to miss!
Looking forward to the Carnival celebrations?
