This gorgeous former arts museum in Valletta is set to receive some much-needed TLC
The Admiralty House in Valletta will receive a much-needed facelift thanks to a restoration project of €4.4 million, which will see the former 17th century arts museum turned into offices for the Attorney General and the State Attorney.
The incredible palazzo
The stunning building is a 17th century palazzo consisting of two floors and a basement level, with an impressive grand staircase leading to the piano nobile. This palazzo was one of the first ones to be built in the capital, and was originally a residence of several knights during their time on the island.
By the 1820s during the British period, the palace became known as Admiralty House, and was the seat of the Commander-in-Chief of the British Mediterranean Fleet until 1961. In 1974, the palazzo was inaugurated as the National Museum of Fine Arts.
The restoration project
The project, that is in the hands of the Restoration Directorate under the Ministry for Culture, is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2020.
Works include the restoration of both facades of the building, ceiling paintings, original apertures and historical elements of the building. During the restoration process, mechanical and electrical services will be installed to offer the comfort and commodities of modern offices.
Grand surroundings indeed. We're just a little jealous!
