The beaches will be expanding to welcome more locals and tourists.
The sandy beaches at St George’s Bay in Birzebbuga, Ghar Ahmar in Marsaxlokk and Balluta Bay in St Julian’s are expected to undergo sand regeneration in order to expand in size for the summer months.
The projects in the three different localities will soon begin to create larger beaches to welcome many more tourists, who will be hitting the beach come summer. Just like last year’s Balluta Bay project, sand from all three beaches will be dredged up from the outer part of the bay to ensure the least possible environmental damage.
Last year’s project at Balluta Bay was welcomed by multiple beachgoers, who visited the beach once it was expanded. And as a beach hopper myself, I must say it was constantly packed. However, after the very unexpected and chaotic storm last February, the sand was washed out, shifting Balluta Bay back to square one.
The ultimate aim of projects like these is to offer locals and tourists more beaches in the south of the island and in the heart of the bustling tourist areas like Sliema and St Julian’s. However, residents are also pleading for refurbishment of public areas, pavements, the promenade and planting of trees, among others.
What do you think about the beach regeneration projects?
